Indianapolis, IN
I went to Indy this year more pumped for a race then I think ever before. Last year, my dream came true in my first season as a professional when I made my first ever GNC main event at the Indy Mile. I only got to run 4 laps in the final, so I was ready to come back and do 25. We had a huge problem before practice started. My main 750, the one that I have been running all year in the series broke a cam shaft before practice started. I was more then bummed and really flustered. We had a back-up 750, but I only rode it 4 laps all year and that was in Beulah Park and I didn't like it at all. To say the least, I was nervous. We tried to make the bike as good as possible, but I just didn't feel comfortable on it all day.
I qualified like 31st I think, which was not a good position. Just about right in the middle of the pack as there were 62 riders on the day, the largest field at a twins race I have ever been in. The track was starting to brush off and get a little slick. Not what I was expecting and not what it was like last year. I lined up for the 1st heat race with a bunch of fast guys. Coolbeth and Smith who ended up getting 1st and 2nd in the main, both Halbert brothers, Shaun Russell, Robinson, Kirkness, Taylor, Mataya and a few others. I got an ok start and was running like 11th but I ran out of tear-offs on lap 3. I passed Mataya and Stear, then I caught and passed Don Taylor and started catching up to the pack in front of me, but just didn't have enough time and it was extremely hard to see with just wiping my shield.
I lined up for the semi with Kopp, Russell, Gedeon, Weidman, Mataya, Pegram and a few more fast guys. We made a small gearing change before the semi and we definitely went the wrong way with it. I actually don't think I ever made a worse one tooth gearing change in my life. Got a horrible start, passed a few guys and ended up getting 7th or so, missing it by a few. Extremely bummed about the day. The bike ran good, but I just couldn't get it to handle like my main bike and it seemed to be down a few horses. I didn't loose too much ground in points and I have my hands full with a busy weekend in Springfield coming up. We will have the other motorcycle fixed and ready to rock and roll.
My very good buddy, Brandon Robinson was injured in a first turn crash during the main event. He actually flipped over the fence lining the track and landed in the parking lot. When I went over to him, he was talking and all, but was in a lot of pain. He broke his pelvis in 3 spots and also his hip joint bone. He had surgery sunday in Indy and got 12 screws and a plate. We are hoping we can pick him up to watch Springfield with us. Please pray for a full recovery and sign his guestbook on his website @ brobinson44.com to help raise his spirits as he has a long road ahead of him.
